HISTORIC PROVENANCE
The Bust of Lucius Verus is a reproduction of a marble portrait of the Roman co-emperor Lucius Verus (A.D. 161–169) in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is said that Verus, who ruled alongside Marcus Aurelius (r. A.D. 161–180), was an idle and feckless leader, but the fragmentary head at the Museum shows him favorably depicted as leonine and majestic. The original bust typifies the Antonine style of carving, with its exquisite drillwork in the hair and dramatic engraved eyes. Our reproduction has been faithfully carved in marble, which offers unique variations in color and natural veins, and is placed on a black metal base.
